Re:Nylon
Nylon has been a major material for Prada. The debut of the brand's '84 collection Pocone in its line of bags and accessories received worldwide praise. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy collection that buzzbeast-ready Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in for the Met Gala. The recycled material is the result of a partnership with Aquafil, a Italian textile yarn maker that makes Econyl fabric from recycled nylon waste. This fabric can be recycled many times without losing its quality. It's part a larger plan to move from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. In addition to the six Re:Nylon bags, the range also includes a pair shoes and boots made from repurposed ECONYL and a range of apparel in the same material.
Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the revolutionary process used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into recycled ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's switch to re-Nylon is its largest reduction in virgin nylon so far. It will save 70,000 barrels of crude oil every year. This move will also lower the company's carbon emissions by approximately 57,000 tons. The label recently went fur-free on its clothing and accessories. This is the most recent sustainability initiative.
Recycled Nylon
